In 1871, Heronswood house was constructed as a retreat for William Edward Hearn (1826-1888), a politician and academic who was one of the earliest lecturers at the University of Melbourne.
The main house was built using bluestone with limestone dressings.
It was designed in Gothic Revival style, probably by Edward La Trobe Bateman.
Heronswood is also notable for its gardens and plants for sale.
